August 30th

Today we left the peaceful Shaker Village and visited a small town in Kentucky called Berea. It is known as an artisan enclave for KY and didn't disappoint. Bill patiently accompanied me into many different shops -- such a good man! One exciting shop was owned by a self-proclaimed hippie in her previous life, a weaver and an outstanding artist. She played the dulcimer and sang for us. (The video is on the Road Trip Photo Album, so check it out!)

August 29th

I must say that we have had a thoroughly delightful stay here at the Shaker Village. The whole place is charming.  And again, it seems like there's nobody else here to speak of but us! We've had 4 very informative and interesting tours and all but 1 has been just us. The singer/lecturer who talked about Shaker religious rites brought the services to life with her truly beautiful voice -- such a gifted singer! The Indian Runner ducks are about as adorable as a duck can be. The meals in the restaurant have been delicious with multiple choices for us gluten-free folks. The only downside is Bill fished in the pond this morning and got lots of nibbles but no bites!

Mammoth Cave is pretty amazing! We had a very interesting tour (lasted a good 2 hours and took us pretty deep into the cave). Did you know that the Cave dirt can be turned into saltpeter,  which is used in ammunition? The temperature in the Cave stays at an even 54 degrees all year and that felt pretty good to us while the outside temperature was in the high 90's! Afterward, we drove to Shaker Village and we stayed in one of the restored old buildings. we have a full run of the property while we're staying here. Very cool!

August 27th

Today we had to say goodbye to Max and Sierra.  We had such a wonderful time together! Thank you for a fabulous visit. We love you!

So on to Kentucky. We didn't know that Kentucky seems to shut its doors on Tuesdays! We tried to tour the Jim Beam distillery -- closed. Wanted to visit "My Old KY Home" museum -- closed. Who knew? We just drove to our next campground, which was exceedingly pleasant. Had a nice swim in the lake and just hung out. Car camped for the night -- we're getting good at this!

August 26th

Hi everyone!

Didn't do much -- Max and Sierra had school obligations all afternoon, so we did housekeeping chores like laundry and car rearranging. We enjoyed a refreshing afternoon swim in their nice pool to beat the heat -- it's been in the high 90s! We all went out to dinner for a last celebration of being together.

And let’s not forget, we're being hosted not only by the current reigning Trouble champion but also by what some consider the elusive, long-lost trophy itself!

August 25th

We are having a great time in Indianapolis with Max and Sierra. The highlight of the day was visiting Lift Academy and seeing where Max and Sierra are learning to fly!

We went back to the apartment to cook dinner and hang out. We all worked together to make some tasty bolognese and bananas foster for dessert.

Max and Bill also played a few rounds of chess, It might be a young man's game. lol!

We are in Indianapolis with Max and Sierra! They have a really sweet apartment -- all the pictures and decorations are reflective of their interests and pursuits. It's a homey, comfy place and we are so very happy to be here! We went to a Southern comfort food restaurant for lunch and the food was yummy. Max has been helping us with the blog -- take a look at the photos with the previous posts.

August 23rd

Another great day in Dayton! We went to the Wright Brothers Museum and Carillon Park. The park had a "Carousel of Progress" like a show that could rival the one in Disney World-- all I could think was how much Jimmy and Karl would love it, lol. And the biggest, most glamorous display of cash registers imaginable! The Wright Brothers stuff was pretty good too. We went back to the Air Force Museum for a couple hours -- looked at the WW2 stuff. Bill wanted to see the kind of plane his dad flew in the war.  We walked along the river to a very nice Mexican taqueria-- fish tacos, street corn, and mojitos-- delish!  The river walk had a music fest on our way back -- lots of people enjoying the band, dancing, and having fun. Yay, Dayton! Tomorrow morning we head to Max and Sierra's!!!

August 22nd

Good morning! We are in beautiful Dayton Ohio. Might seem like a funny place to visit but it's actually a pretty cool place. Yesterday we went to the National Air Force Museum, which is amazing! We were there for 3 hours and only the closing of the building forced us to leave! We may try to head back there if we have time. Tomorrow we are going to the Wright Brothers sites.

On the way to Dayton, we stopped at an enormous antique mart - very interesting stuff there, and if we weren't already packed to the gills we could have found a few nice things to bring home. Bill says he knew there was a good reason for packing so much stuff, lol!

August 20th -21st

20th -Hi all!  Today we went to the Allegheny National Forest for another shot at camping. While our first spot was a living hell,  this one felt like the heavens shined down upon us! Just lovely, even a small fishing stream just for Bill! Camp dinner of hot dogs, baked beans, and corn on the cob cooked over an open fire, yum! I tried a roasted chocolate-filled marshmallow - sounds like it should be decadently good but the chocolate never quite melted. I'll just have to keep at it till I get it right, lol. We slept in the car last night and it was actually pretty comfy - sometimes it pays to be short!

21st- Today we visited Presque Isle on Lake Erie, another very cool place. I loved the soft sand beaches where we collected skipping stones and climbed up to the top of a restored old lighthouse for an eagle's eye view.

August 18th-19th

We spend the 18th in the Finger Lakes area of New York. We had a beautiful ride up to the Finger Lakes through farmland mountains small villages. We were planning to camp on our two nights here but when we arrived at the campground Bill pronounced that it was the worst campsite imaginable and it was raining! We braved it out for a night but packed up for a hotel the next morning.

On the 19th we visited a place called Watkins Glen State Park. We had a beautiful walk along a series of stunning waterfalls.

August 17th

It's 9:05 and we are off on our journey. Our first stop was breakfast a block from home.. we had a lovely drive along beautiful scenery for our trip to Athens New York. It is a Charming little town. We had an outdoor lunch beside the Hudson River, and we walked all over town mostly admiring the beautiful doors and lovely old houses. We rested at our B&B and then went to dinner at the only restaurant in the city. It had surprisingly good food and is the place to be for locals. It was a great first day.

September 11th

At some point during my sleep last night, I started to feel like Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz". I was ready to go home. Bill agree...
