September 4th

Today we visited Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home in VA). It's a place well worth seeing. I had been there probably 40 years ago but it felt like a new, richer experience. Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence and wrote about equality, liberty, and happiness.  The curators of Monticello do an excellent job of telling the complicated story of slavery (he owned 607 people in his lifetime and only freed 10 of them, 4 of whom were his biological children who were enslaved until their 21st birthdays) alongside his brilliance, love of education and hopes for our country. Jefferson was the architect and interior designer of his beautiful home and his influence and interests are easy to see in every room.

After we left Monticello we drove about 2 hours to Lake Anna State Park in VA. We arrived here about 5:30 and the doors to the campsite were figuratively closed. Luckily as we drove around we discovered a ranger on a golf cart (our hero!) who got us checked into our campsite. Dinner highlights-- apples cooked with a little sugar and cinnamon cooked over the fire and potatoes wrapped in tin foil cooked right in the fire.Yum!

And a little side note. My brother Tom had surgery today that I was worried about -- it sounds like it went very well. I'm so thankful.
